Motivation is never something I've had a lot of. At school I was always the one that got away with doing the bare minimum yet still managed to get good results, rarely handed my homework in on time yet never got into trouble. Its only as I have become and adult and entered the scary world of the current job market that I realise I have absolutely no motivation whatsoever, and that is a major problem.
About a year ago I made a list that looked something like this:
-Move out
-Get a job you love
-Travel to Australia
-Don't eat so many McDonalds. :/
-Research courses
-Find out what you want to do
Although some are quite vague and others simple, have I done any of those things? No.
1. Set One Small Goal - This is the most important point & it needs to be something achievable. Instead of thinking about the multiple things you want to do, concentrate on one that is attainable and work towards it, once you've done that you can move on to the next. Separating the goals makes them easier to achieve and less daunting, the more success you have the more motivated you'll become.
2.Write a List, Write Your goal down and put it EVERYWHERE - you need to be constantly reminded of your goal, don't let it slip out of sight, for example, if you wanted to eat less stick a note to the fridge/cupboards. It sounds silly, but it will make you think twice when you reach for that extra chocolate bar or extra slice of toast.
3. Persevere - this is an obvious one, once you set yourself a goal, don't lose sight of it, keep it in you mind and don't give up. This is why you should set achievable goals, ones you know you can attain.
4. Step Outside Your Comfort Zone - I haven't always done this as much as I've wanted to, but it will lead to new opportunities and also make you feel a million times better, a few months ago i went to Thailand travelling for a month, with no accommodation booked I just turned up in a completely foreign environment and was forced to get on with it.
5. Don't overthink things - I constantly worry about what people will think of me, are they judging what I wearing, the way I look? I've recently taken the view that i won't see most of these people again, so why does it matter. It will help you in situations you don't feel comfortable in and give you new opportunities.
Although motivation won't come all at once and you have to expect to have a down day, these are a few points I use to help stay motivated.
